The Enhancer of split locus is required during many cell-fate decisions in Drosophila, including the segregation of neural precursors in the embryo. We have generated monoclonal antibodies that recognise some of the basic helix-loop-helix proteins encoded by the Enhancer of split locus and have used them to examine expression of Enhancer of split proteins during neurogenesis.
The Georgiou Lab Enzyme Safely Starves Cancer Cells in Preclinical Study AUSTIN, Texas — A research team led by scientists at The University of Texas Austin has engineered an enzyme that safely treats prostate and breast cancer in animals and also lengthens the lifespan of models that develop chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

11/1/2001 · Groucho (Gro) is the founding member of a family of transcriptional co-repressors that are recruited by a number of different transcription factors. Drosophila has a single gro gene, whose loss of function affects processes ranging from sex determination to embryonic patterning and neuroblast specification. We have characterized a function of Gro in imaginal development, namely the …
The hedgehog (Hh) signalling pathway is conserved throughout metazoans and plays an important regulatory role in both embryonic development and adult homeostasis. Many levels of regulation exist that control the release, reception, and interpretation of the hedgehog signal. The fatty nature of the Shh ligand means that it tends to associate tightly with the cell membrane, and yet it is known ...
The very conserved Notch pathway is used iteratively during development and adulthood to regulate cell fates. Notch activation relies on interactions between neighboring cells, through the binding of Notch receptors to their ligands, both transmembrane molecules. This inter-cellular contact initiates a cascade of events eventually transforming the cell surface receptor into a nuclear factor ...
On the cover: In this issue, Cai et al. (pp. 1146–1159) report that, when cells collectively migrate, the tension generated by E-cadherin homophilic interactions is different for each cell in the group.
Fotis Kafatos was an influential Greek biologist, having had a pivotal role in triggering the interest of the Greek government for Science, with the establishment of the Faculty of Biology in the University of Athens, the Faculty of Biology in the University of Crete and the IMBB in Heraklion.

(pp. 1146–1159) report that, when cells collectively migrate, the tension generated by E-cadherin homophilic interactions is different for each cell in the group. E-cadherin-mediated coordination among the different cells in the cluster is required for directed and persistent chemotaxis in vivo.
